Sherwin-Williams’ Bob Murphy Wins SSPC John D. Keane Award of Merit
Award recognizes outstanding leadership and decades of service in Protective & Marine Coatings
CLEVELAND, OHIO (May 1, 2017) – Bob Murphy, Project Development Manager for Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings, has been awarded the 2017 John D. Keane Award of Merit by the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC).
Named for the society’s Executive Director from 1957-1984, the award honors outstanding leadership and significant contributions to the development of the coatings industry and SSPC. The prestigious award was presented at SSPC’s Awards Luncheon Program at the organization’s annual conference in Tampa, Florida, on January 30.
SSPC’s Executive Director Bill Worms presented Murphy with the award at the event and said Murphy was “an excellent choice” for the honor. Worms advised that this distinction is only given when the Board of Governors “deems a member worthy” and that there are often several years between honorees.
“Bob Murphy received the John D. Keane Award for his outstanding participation and contributions to SSPC and the coatings industry,” said Worms. “Bob has been an active member in SSPC technical committees and has been a subject matter expert in the development of several SSPC courses.”
“I can think of very few other members who have contributed so much time and dedication to SSPC,” he continued. “Bob has also chaired SSPC’s Education Program Advisory Committee, authored papers for the conference technical program, been an officer for an SSPC local chapter, and is an instructor for several SSPC courses. He has also helped SSPC develop a good working relationship with other organizations such as AWWA and ICRI.”
As for Murphy, he called the honor “a humbling event” and said, “There are a great many individuals who also deserved this award, so I feel truly honored to be named the 2017 recipient.”
“It is a real honor to be recognized by your peers,” Murphy said. “I am humbled by the recognition.”
Murphy has been with The Sherwin-Williams Company for more than 37 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
Murphy is a corrosion and water and wastewater industry veteran, and an active member of SSPC and many other esteemed industry organizations, including the American Water Works Association (AWWA), the National Rural Water Association (NRWA), the Water Environment Federation (WEF), and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE). He is an SSPC Protective Coatings Specialist (PCS) and a NACE-Certified Coatings Inspector, as well as a Concrete Coating Inspector (CCI) and Course Instructor.
As a strong supporter of organizational membership, Murphy encourages others to get involved.
“If you want to make things happen, you’ve got to do it from within,” Bob advised. “You have to get involved to affect positive change.”
Along with Murphy’s Merit Award, this year’s luncheon included honors for the year’s best projects, chapter awards, Honorary Life Member Award, Women in Coatings Impact Award, Coatings Education Award, Technical Achievement Award, and the SSPC Past President Award.
